The construction industry in the United States is booming, with many megaprojects underway. From Elon Musk's The Boring Co. to the O'Hare Modernization Program, these projects are making a huge impact on the country. The largest of these projects is the Venture Global Plaquemines LNG project in Louisiana, which will export up to 20 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas per year.
Other major projects include the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop, the Hudson Yards in Manhattan, and the Second Avenue Subway in New York City. The Chicago Drainage System and the Ocotillo Semiconductor Plant Expansion are also noteworthy projects. The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop is a 1.5-mile-long underground system that moves up to 4,400 passengers per hour through two tunnels with a fleet of Teslas. The Hudson Yards is a real estate development in the Chelsea and Hudson Yards neighborhoods of Manhattan, and is New York's biggest urban development since Rockefeller Center. The Second Avenue Subway is an 8.5-mile-long line with 16 stations that serves about 560,000 passengers a day.
The Chicago Drainage System includes four systems with a total of 109 miles of drainage tunnels, all 8 to 33 feet in diameter and 150 to 300 feet underground. The Ocotillo Semiconductor Plant Expansion is a 5.3-hectare project that will expand its semiconductor chip production plant in Arizona. The largest project of all is the Venture Global Plaquemines LNG project in Louisiana. This project involves the construction of an LNG liquefaction and export terminal with the capacity to export up to 20 MTPA on 255 hectares of land. According to Blue Castle Holdings, it will use “less than 1% of the current water diversion in the state” for its facilities, while aiming to increase the amount of electricity produced in Utah by 50%.
Terra-Gen reports that part of the solar panels are already operational, and Solar Power World states that it will include a 1,118 MW solar complex with an energy storage capacity of 2,165 MWh.The O'Hare Modernization Program (OMP) is another major construction project. This gigantic megaproject includes a new eight-way terminal and an esplanade below the GCT, 13 miles of tunnels, 40 miles of new tracks, a new storage yard for 300 trains and new bridges at a major crossing. It is designed to expand capacity and improve the traveler experience at O'Hare International Airport, and is expected to reach important milestones in the coming year and beyond. These five megaprojects are just some examples of the many construction projects underway in the United States. With infrastructure construction set to grow thanks to the bipartisan Infrastructure Act, there are sure to be many more impressive projects on the horizon.
